A-Level Chemistry is an intellectually stimulating and highly respected qualification that explores the composition, structure, properties, and reactions of matter. This course builds on concepts studied at GCSE and develops your understanding of how chemistry underpins much of the modern world—from medicines and materials to sustainable energy and environmental science.
At City Sixth Form, our Chemistry A-Level provides a perfect balance of theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory experience, preparing students for a wide range of science-related university degrees and careers.
You will study key areas of physical, inorganic, and organic chemistry, gaining both breadth and depth of understanding across the discipline.
Practical work is at the heart of A-Level Chemistry. You’ll complete a minimum of 12 required practical activities across both years, developing key laboratory and analytical skills. Your performance will be endorsed separately as part of the Practical Endorsement in Chemistry, which universities highly value.
Assessment is entirely exam-based at the end of Year 2, covering both theoretical and practical aspects:
Paper 1: Physical and Inorganic Chemistry (35%)
Paper 2: Organic and Physical Chemistry (35%)
Paper 3: Unified Chemistry and Practical Skills (30%)
Exams include a mix of multiple-choice, structured, and extended-response questions, designed to test both understanding and application of chemical concepts.
A minimum of Grade 6 in GCSE Chemistry (or 6–6 in Combined Science)
Grade 5 or above in GCSE Mathematics
A strong interest in science and problem-solving
A-Level Chemistry is essential for students planning to study Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Environmental Science at university.
It’s also highly respected by universities for a wide range of other subjects, thanks to the analytical thinking, research, and problem-solving skills it develops.
Graduates with chemistry backgrounds often pursue careers in:
