Course Overview

A-Level History is an engaging and intellectually rewarding subject that explores key events, people, and ideas that have shaped the world we live in today. You will develop a deep understanding of political, social, and economic change across different periods and regions, while refining your ability to think critically, analyse evidence, and communicate effectively.

At City Sixth Form, the History A-Level is taught through discussion, investigation, and interpretation, helping you understand how historical developments influence modern society and global politics.

Course Structure

This course provides a balance of British and international history, covering major themes and periods that have defined the modern era.

 

Assessments

Assessment combines final examinations with coursework:

  • Paper 1: Breadth Study (40%) – covering a broad historical period

  • Paper 2: Depth Study (40%) – focusing on detailed analysis of a specific era

  • Coursework (20%) – an independent historical investigation of around 3,000–3,500 words

You’ll be assessed on your ability to analyse sources, interpret evidence, and construct well-argued essays supported by historical knowledge.

Entry Requirement

  • A minimum of Grade 6 in GCSE History (if taken)
  • Grade 5 or above in GCSE English Language
  • Strong writing and analytical skills
