Course Overview

A-Level Geography explores the complex relationship between people and the planet, focusing on the physical and human processes that shape our world. It helps students understand global challenges such as climate change, urbanisation, migration, and resource management, while developing critical thinking, research, and analytical skills.

At City Sixth Form, this course offers a balance between classroom learning and fieldwork, encouraging you to apply geographical theory to real-world issues both locally and globally.

Course Structure

The course is divided into physical geography and human geography, allowing students to gain a broad and balanced understanding of the subject.

 

Assessments

Assessment includes written examinations and a non-examined assessment (NEA):

  • Paper 1: Physical Geography (40%) – includes questions on natural systems and landscapes

  • Paper 2: Human Geography (40%) – focuses on globalisation, population, and urban environments

  • Paper 3: Geographical Investigation (20%) – an independent fieldwork project of 3,000–4,000 words

Exams include data analysis, short answers, and extended essay questions that test your ability to apply geographical knowledge critically and creatively.

Entry Requirement

  • A minimum of Grade 6 in GCSE Geography (if taken)
  • Grade 5 or above in GCSE English Language and Mathematics
  • Curiosity about global issues, the environment, and human development
