GCSE Biology explores the fascinating science of living organisms — how they function, grow, and interact with the world around them. Students gain an understanding of life processes, from the structure of cells to the complexity of ecosystems.
At City Sixth Form, Biology is taught through engaging lessons and practical experiments that develop curiosity, scientific thinking, and problem-solving skills. This course provides a strong foundation for A-Level Biology and future studies in health, science, and environmental fields.
The course is divided into key topics covering the structure and function of living organisms, genetics, and ecology.
Cell biology and organisation
Infection and response
Bioenergetics and photosynthesis
Homeostasis and response
Inheritance, variation, and evolution
Ecology and ecosystems
Assessment is through two written examinations at the end of the course:
Paper 1: Topics 1–4 (50%)
Paper 2: Topics 5–7 (50%)
Both papers include multiple-choice, structured, and extended-response questions.
You will also complete a series of required practicals to develop hands-on scientific skills and earn the Practical Endorsement in Biology.
No prior study required, but an interest in science and experimentation is essential.
A good understanding of GCSE Mathematics will support data analysis and scientific calculations.
GCSE Biology provides a solid foundation for studying A-Level Biology, Chemistry, or Psychology, as well as vocational science qualifications.
Career pathways include:
Medicine and Nursing
