GCSE Chemistry explores the substances that make up our world and the reactions that transform them. Students learn about the structure of atoms, the periodic table, chemical reactions, and the vital role chemistry plays in everyday life — from medicine to energy production.
At City Sixth Form, our Chemistry course blends theory with hands-on experiments to help you understand how science explains the materials and processes around us.
This course covers the fundamental principles of chemistry and develops the analytical and investigative skills needed for further scientific study.
Assessment is through two written examinations at the end of the course:
Paper 1: Topics 1–5 (50%)
Paper 2: Topics 6–10 (50%)
Both papers include multiple-choice, structured, and extended-response questions.
Students also complete required practicals, which build scientific skills and contribute to the Practical Endorsement in Chemistry.
No specific prior study required, but an interest in science and problem-solving is essential.
A good level of Mathematics is recommended for calculations and data analysis.
GCSE Chemistry provides a strong foundation for A-Level Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or Psychology, and vocational science qualifications.
Career opportunities include:
Medicine, Pharmacy, and Nursing
Chemical and Environmental Engineering
Forensic Science and Research
Biochemistry and Material Science
