A-Level Biology explores the science of life — from the smallest molecules to the complexity of ecosystems. This subject helps you understand how living organisms function, adapt, and interact with their environment. It’s perfect for students interested in the natural world, healthcare, or scientific research.
At City Sixth Form, our Biology course combines theory with practical investigation, developing your analytical skills and scientific understanding through hands-on experiments and real-world applications.
This course covers the major themes of modern biology, providing a strong foundation for further study in science, medicine, and related fields.
Biological molecules and cell structure
Transport in animals and plants
Exchange systems and gas exchange
Genetic information, variation, and relationships between organisms
Energy transfers in and between organisms
Organisms’ responses to internal and external environments
Genetics, populations, evolution, and ecosystems
The control of gene expression
Assessment is through written examinations at the end of the course:
Paper 1: Topics 1–4 (35%)
Paper 2: Topics 5–8 (35%)
Paper 3: Synoptic paper and practical skills (30%)
Practical competency is assessed separately through a series of required experiments, leading to a Practical Endorsement in Biology.
