Course Overview

GCSE English Language develops students’ ability to communicate clearly, read critically, and write creatively. It builds confidence in using English for a variety of purposes — from analysing fiction and non-fiction texts to expressing ideas effectively in speech and writing.

At City Sixth Form, this course helps students master the skills needed for further study, employment, and everyday communication in the modern world.

Course Content

The course focuses on reading and writing across a wide range of texts, as well as developing spoken communication skills.

 

Assessments

Assessment is through two written examinations at the end of the course, plus a separate spoken language assessment.

  • Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing (50%)

  • Paper 2: Writers’ Viewpoints and Perspectives (50%)

  • Spoken Language Endorsement: Assessed separately for presentation and communication skills

Each exam assesses reading and writing through unseen texts, requiring students to interpret, compare, and express ideas clearly.

  • No specific prior study required.

  • A keen interest in reading, writing, and expressing ideas effectively will be helpful.
